D21 Applauds Sens. Schumer, Merkley & Klobuchar for their National Leadership on S.1, the For the People Act

Democracy 21 Applauds Senate Leader Schumer, Lead Sponsor Merkley, and Senator Klobuchar for their National Leadership on S.1, the For the People Act
Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer
Democracy 21 strongly applauds Senate Leader Chuck Schumer for his national leadership in making the For the People Act Senate bill S.1. Democracy 21 also strongly applauds Senator Jeff Merkley, the lead sponsor of S.1, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, the incoming Rules Committee Chair, for their national leadership on the legislation.

Democracy 21 also strongly applauds and thanks the Lincoln Project for supporting the bill.

S.1 along with H.R. 1, the For the People Act in the House, are now the lead bills in Congress.

H.R. 1 is virtually the same bill that passed the House in the last Congress but was blocked from Senate consideration by then-Senate Majority Leader McConnell.

We have a broken political system and a corrupting campaign finance system.

After four years of a Trump presidency, our democracy has reached a dangerous place culminating with Trump’s blatantly false claims about the election being stolen from him, his efforts to delegitimize the Biden presidency and his creating and inciting of a criminal mob insurrection that attacked and desecrated the United States Capitol.

H.R. 1 and S.1 are historic reform bills that are pro-voter, anti-corruption, pro-government ethics, and anti-partisan gerrymandering. The bills will repair our political and campaign finance systems and strengthen our democracy. They respond to the widely held view in  the country that the system in Washington is rigged for the wealthy and powerful and against the interests of most Americans.

The House and Senate should move quickly to enact H.R. 1 and S.1 and set the stage for policy decisions in the coming years that are not controlled by moneyed interests and that ensure that every eligible voter is able to vote in federal elections.
