Democracy 21 and the Democracy 21 Education Fund work to strengthen the integrity and fairness of our democracy and to increase the role of citizens in our political process. The organization brings unique policy and litigation experience and expertise to campaign finance and democracy issues, and to related government integrity, transparency and accountability issues.
Since launching in 1997, the organization has played a leading national role in the efforts to address the nation’s campaign finance problems through public education, litigation, and other efforts. D21 President Fred Wertheimer has played a key role in every major campaign finance reform and ethics battle in Congress since the post-Watergate reforms in the 1970s and has participated as a lawyer in every major Supreme Court campaign finance case during this period.
Our program agenda includes:
- Playing a lead role in challenging the unprecedented abuses by former President Trump, election deniers, and anti-democracy forces in the country.
- Working closely with democracy reform leaders in Congress and playing a lead role in the coalition of 145 organizations fighting to enact campaign reform, voting rights, and election security measures. We came within two Senate votes of enacting historic voting rights and campaign reform in 2021. That work continues.
- Leading the fight to prevent a Constitutional Convention, which is only six states short of the 34 states needed to call the Convention. If called, the Convention would place up for grabs every individual right and protection provided by the Constitution.
Democracy 21 is working to protect the integrity of our democracy and to ensure we have a government where citizens are heard and fairly represented.
