Legal Activities

Campaign finance and ethics laws exist to protect the interests of the American people in honest government. Legal actions are required to defend the constitutionality and integrity of campaign finance laws and to challenge improper actions by the president, White House officials, members of Congress, and outside groups. The laws and their proper enforcement prevent government corruption, protect the interests of the American people from influence-buying and selling, and to stop the misuse of public office for personal financial gain.

  • We defend campaign finance laws in the Supreme Court, in the lower federal courts and at the Federal Election Commission. We successfully defended in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of public financing of elections, campaign finance disclosure requirements and contribution limits on candidates and parties, the core campaign finance laws.
  • We file complaints and request investigations with the Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission regarding violations of campaign finance laws
  • We file complaints and requests for investigations concerning executive branch and congressional ethics violations with the Office of Government Ethics and the Office of Congressional Ethics.
  • We challenge rule makings in the executive branch to undermine statutory responsibilities and propose new rules in the executive branch and at the Federal Election Commission to properly implement federal laws.
