The Democracy Legal Strike Force

Last year, Democracy 21 Education Fund established the Democracy Legal Strike Force as a project of the organization to help hold accountable those who attacked our democracy in the 2020 presidential election, combat the still-thriving election deniers’ movement, and work to protect the integrity of our elections in 2024 and beyond.

Since its launch, the Strike Force has pursued litigation, conducted deep-dive research and in-depth analysis, and issued reports and studies to advance that mission.

A wide range of legal experts; top litigators; skilled researchers and fact checkers; and communications experts are collaborating to produce Strike Force materials.

With the two Justice Department indictments of former President Donald Trump, along with the hush money case indictment in Manhattan, and this week, the wide-ranging criminal conspiracy indictment of the former President and 18 co-conspirators, we have intensified our legal work, research, and analysis.

The scope of the cases – including the complex breadth of this week’s Georgia indictment – makes our Strike Force efforts a valuable addition to the work to obtain accountability for alleged wrongdoing.

Here are some examples of the activities involving the Democracy Legal Strike Force:

January 6th Committee Report, Additional Background, & Resources

No one – note even a former President – is above the law.

As this week’s Georgia indictment alleges: “Trump and the other Defendants charged in this Indictment refused to accept that Trump lost, and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump. That conspiracy contained a common plan and purpose to commit two or more acts of racketeering activity in Fulton County, Georgia, elsewhere in the State of Georgia, and in other states.”

Our democracy was nearly brought down by our country’s first attempt at a presidential coup, including the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6.

The American people deserve to have the allegations in each of these four cases addressed in court. Former President Trump and the other defendants deserve their day in court.

These cases must play out. We must hold those who are found responsible for wrongdoing accountable. And, it is incumbent on us to ensure that this can never happen again.
