Trump’s Big Lie Continues
The former President continues to spread his Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.
According to a recent poll, Trump has managed to convince an astonishing 78 percent of Republicans that President Biden was not legitimately elected, even though there is not a shred of evidence to support Trump’s blatantly false claim.
The Big Lie has been the basis upon which 18 Republican-controlled state legislatures have passed the greatest wave of voter suppression and discrimination laws since the Jim Crow era.
At the same time, Senate Republicans are backing their state colleagues by standing ready to use an obstructionist filibuster to block legislation that would establish fair voting rules for federal elections and override these dangerous voter suppression laws.
State legislatures have also been passing laws to move existing nonpartisan administration of our elections to Republican control. And, phony state audits – “fraudits” – are being pursued in some states to discredit Biden’s win with not a scintilla of evidence to back them up.
Republicans are also making a concerted effort to elect Big Lie supporters to Secretaries of State positions, which would put them in charge of administering future elections.
Let’s be very clear about what’s going on here.
While they claim to be protecting the integrity of our elections, in reality Republicans, led by Trump, are aggressively working to undermine our elections for their own purely partisan gain.
Trump and his followers are using the Big Lie in an effort to rig the 2022 congressional elections and the 2024 presidential and congressional elections in their favor.
The impact of their vicious and false propaganda can be seen in the almost 4 out of 5 Republicans that believe, without any basis, that President Biden was not legitimately elected.
This is why our democracy as we know it is at stake in whether we enact the Freedom to Vote Act.
This legislation addresses voter suppression and discrimination, and efforts to subvert and politicize the administration of our elections. The legislation provides voting rules for federal elections based on the rules that made the 2020 national elections “the most secure in American history,” according to Trump’s own Homeland Security officials.
Trump and his followers are trying to pull off the first political coup in our country’s history. We can’t let that happen.
The filibuster rules must be bypassed as they routinely have been in the past.
The Freedom to Vote Act must be enacted.
