We Will Survive.
Our nation survived the Civil War.
We survived World War I.
We survived the Great Depression.
We survived World War II.
We will survive four more years of Donald Trump.
But it is going to take a lot of hard work by people who believe in our Constitution, our democracy, and the rule of law.
It will take resistance, monitoring, watchdogging, challenging, litigating, and being ever ready to stand up to wrongdoing and wrongful policies.
It will take speaking out and attacking disinformation like that spread during the election by Elon Musk on X, his propaganda machine. And, Musk can be expected to continue spreading disinformation through X.
Don’t forget that more than 70 million Americans will have rejected Trump in the election.
An NBC News national exit poll found that 36 percent of voters said that the “state of democracy” was the most important issue to them. The economy came in second, at 30 percent.
This demonstrates that a whole lot of Americans recognize the threat to our democracy posed by Trump, who has continually shown disdain for our constitutional values and the rule of law.
Trump has shown his autocratic instincts and that he is most comfortable with foreign dictators and tyrants.
Trump also has a license to commit crimes in office without legal accountability, thanks to the Supreme Court’s disastrous, anti-democratic opinion on presidential immunity written by Chief Justice John Roberts.
The guardrails that existed during Trump’s first Administration will be gone in his second term.
It is the American people who now must provide the guardrails to protect our democracy and our constitutional system of government.
We will move beyond the Trump years.
And, as the Grateful Dead reminds us – “We Will Survive.”
The fight goes on.
