50+ Civil & Human Rights Organizations, Including D21, Urge Senators To Oppose Kash Patel’s Nomination To Lead FBI
Ahead of Friday’s Senate confirmation hearing on Kash Patel, Trump’s nominee for FBI director, 58 civil and human rights organizations, including Democracy 21, have urged the Senate to oppose Patel’s confirmation.
Given the FBI’s vast authority, “the bureau’s leadership must be entrusted to someone who will uphold the U.S. Constitution, respect the rule of law, and commit to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the American people. Given his record, Mr. Patel is unfit to serve as the next FBI director,” the groups wrote in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-IL).
Among the organizations signing the letter, in addition to Democracy 21, are The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the National Urban League, People For the American Way, and Public Citizen.
Patel, the group’s letter continues, “is wholly unqualified for the role, is a peril to our country’s safety, and is intent on weaponizing this important position for his own personal and political gain.”
The letter explains in detail several reasons why Patel is unfit for the role, including his threats of retribution on political rivals and perceived “enemies”; his willingness to silence and punish journalists, threatening the First Amendment’s Freedom of the Press; and his history of poor judgement.
