D21 Sends Letter to Representatives Urging Support for George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020

Enclosed for your information is a letter sent on June 24, 2020 by Democracy 21 to Members of Congress urging their support for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. Find the full text of the letter below.

June 24, 2020

Dear Representative,

Democracy 21 strongly supports the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020.

The senseless, brutal killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis, and its aftermath, has become an inflection point for the country. This has awakened the nation to the need to deal with systemic racism and racial injustice in the country in ways we have not seen since the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

The massive protests in the country have been overwhelmingly peaceful. These protests are the essence of citizens exercising their constitutional rights to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for redress. And they have raised in stark terms the question of whether we as a people are going to begin doing something about centuries-old problems.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 begins this process by addressing problems of police brutality and misconduct, and racial bias in policing, with concrete solutions.

Democracy 21 strongly urges you to vote for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 and to oppose any efforts to undermine the legislation.

Sincerely,

Fred Wertheimer

President, Democracy 21
