Democracy 21 Urges Representatives To Support H.R. 4, The Voting Rights Advancement Act

Democracy 21 sent a letter to House members this morning urging them to support H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which the House is scheduled to vote on tomorrow, December 6, 2019.

H.R. 4 is critical legislation to repair the damage done to the Voting Rights Act by the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

The letter stated:

The right to vote is at the core of our constitutional system of government. It ensures that the American people have the power to decide who will represent them and who will govern them at the national, state and local levels.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965, historic civil rights legislation, was enacted to prevent acts of racial discrimination and voter suppression from denying people of color their constitutional right to vote. The Voting Rights Act was seriously damaged in 2013 by the Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act, is essential legislation to repair the damage done by the destructive Shelby decision. It does so by modernizing the Voting Rights Act and by restoring protections necessary to prevent racial voter discrimination and voter suppression and thereby to preserve the inalienable right to vote for all eligible voters.

H.R. 4 must be enacted into law to ensure that race is not used to prevent any eligible voter from exercising a uniquely powerful right provided in our democracy – the right to vote.

The letter concluded by urging Representatives to vote for H.R. 4. Read the full letter here.
