“We’re on the cusp of passing the most transformational reform and voting rights legislation since Watergate,” Democracy 21 Vice President Matt Keller tells Lew Lorini, host of The Surreal News, on his program last week.
The Surreal News airs weekly on WSLR-FM in Sarasota, Florida and WBPV-FM in Bradenton, Florida.
Keller, a guest on last week’s program, discusses the current status of the Freedom to Vote Act in Congress, the need for a change in the filibuster rules to allow the legislation to pass, and the essential parts of the legislation that would override the unprecedented number of voter suppression laws passed by Republican state legislatures this year and stop partisan gerrymandering.
Keller also discusses the filibuster’s history and how the filibuster rules can be changed without eliminating the filibuster entirely. By changing the filibuster rules “you strengthen the Senate,” he says.
With 50 Democratic Senators in support of the legislation, Keller says, “we’re close. I’m actually pretty hopeful here.” But, it’s important, he adds, that President Biden use his bully pulpit to press the issue forward.
“If we don’t do this now,” Keller warns, “we’re in big trouble.”
