Democracy 21 Applauds House Passage of DC Statehood
Like the citizens in the current fifty states, the citizens of Washington D.C. fight and die in wars and they pay federal taxes.
Yet they do not have the same right that every other United States citizen has – the right to be represented in Congress by voting Representatives and Senators. They do not control the D.C. budget or the laws that govern D.C.
No taxation without representation was a rallying cry that helped create the United States. Taxation without representation for the citizens of Washington D.C. must end now.
The withholding of full representation for D.C. falls heavily on people of color, who were denied full and fair voting rights in our country for centuries.
Democracy 21 strongly urges the Senate to pass H.R. 51 and make Washington D.C. the 51st state of the United States. This battle must be won to give D.C. citizens the same vote and the same voice in our government as that of the eligible voters of all fifty states.
