National Pro-Democracy Coalition Calls On Senate Democrats To Hold The Floor Until The Freedom To Vote: John R. Lewis Act Is Passed
On Tuesday night, as the Senate continued debate on the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, a coalition of 63 organizations and partners, including Democracy 21, issued statements regarding the urgency and importance of passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and continuing debate until the legislation is passed.
Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer
The Senate must keep debating the Freedom to Vote: John R Lewis Act until the legislation is passed. This legislation is of overriding importance to the nation. Our democracy is on the line.
If Senate opponents want to filibuster, Senate supporters must force them to filibuster. This must not be a free ride where there is a vote or two on cloture and then the Senate moves on to other business. Senate supporters of the voting rights legislation must be prepared to spend whatever time it takes to win this fight. The potentially millions of citizens who will lose their ability to vote because of new state Jim Crow laws deserve no less.
This is the moment of truth for every Senator.
