New Acting Attorney General Whitaker is Conflicted & Must Not Oversee Mueller Investigation

President Trump has appointed Matthew Whitaker to serve as Acting Attorney General. Whitaker has attacked Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation in the past and cannot be allowed to have anything to do with the investigation now.

Members of Congress should immediately demand that Whitaker recuse himself from overseeing the investigation or that he make a commitment to play no role with regard to the investigation.

The story today is not that Attorney General Sessions has been forced out of his job. The story today is that President Trump is making a brazen move to end the Mueller investigation.

President Trump has repeatedly attacked the Mueller investigation in the past.  His appointment of Whitaker appears clearly to be for purpose of killing the Mueller criminal investigation, which is examining the potentially criminal activities of the President, his family and his associates.

By acting to kill an independent investigation that involves his potential wrongdoing, the President is engaging in obstruction of justice and a gross abuse of office.

All of those Republicans and Democrats in Congress who have called for the Mueller investigation to continue without any outside interference must step up now and challenge President Trump’s efforts to cover up Russia’s invasion of our democracy in the 2016 presidential election.
