Overwhelming Majority Of American Voters Call Voting Rights A “Very Important” Issue, According To New Poll

While Senate Republicans and two Democrats – Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) – blocked action on the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis voting rights legislation in January, an overwhelming majority of voters consider voting rights to be one of the most important issues in the upcoming 2022 elections, according to a new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF).

When asked:  “Thinking about this year’s midterm elections, how important, if at all, will the following be in making your decision about who to vote for?” an overwhelming 84 percent of voters called voting rights “very important” or “somewhat important.”

The 67 percent of voters who called voting rights “very important” was the largest percentage of any of the issues tallied, including “the economy and inflation.”

“The passage of dangerous voter suppression and election subversion legislation by Republican-led state legislatures around the country over the past year threatens the very cornerstone of our democracy and Americans know it,” Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer said. “Our lawmakers should heed the overwhelming voice of voters who are calling for our elections to be secure and safe and for voting to be made easier – not harder – for eligible voters.”
