Senate Judiciary Committee Ignores Majority Leader McConnell, Reports Bill to Protect Special Counsel Mueller

Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer

Democracy 21 strongly commends the bipartisan majority on the Senate Judiciary Committee for reporting out important legislation today to protect Special Counsel Mueller from being fired without good cause.

Democracy 21 offers special praise to the bipartisan sponsors of this legislation, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Chris Coons (D-DE) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), who worked hard to produce a single bill and who demonstrated that opportunities still exist in the Senate for impressive bipartisan efforts. Praise is also due to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) for supporting and moving the bill forward despite opposition by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Senator McConnell has stated that he will not schedule this legislation even though it apparently has majority support in the Senate, based on the Judiciary Committee vote.

Senator McConnell has spent much of his decades-long career in the Senate blocking legislation and thwarting the will of the majority though filibusters and obstructionist tactics.

Senator McConnell must not be allowed to act as if he is a Senate of one who can block whatever legislation he wants, even where bipartisan support and a Senate majority exists to support the legislation.

It’s time for citizens throughout the country to tell Senator McConnell that enough is enough, and demand that he promptly schedule the legislation to protect Special Counsel Mueller.
