Trump’s Call To Jail House Jan. 6 Committee Members Is “Dangerous And Outrageous.”
Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer
This past weekend, President-elect Donald Trump said in an NBC “Meet the Press” interview that “everybody” on the House January 6 Committee “should go to jail.”
This is an example of Trump’s presidential revenge and retribution tour. It is the same kind of approach used by dictators like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping, or, until this week, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
These dictators jail their political adversaries at will without legitimate cause because they want to punish them for having the audacity to oppose them.
Trump did not even say they should be investigated, much less tried in a court of law. Trump just went straight to calling for the members of the House Jan. 6 Committee to go to jail.
And how do we suppose Kash Patel would respond to Trump’s statement that he wants to see the January 6 Committee members put in jail, if Patel is eventually confirmed as FBI Director?
Patel already has put together his own “enemies list” of nearly 60 current and former Executive Branch officials. His absolute loyalty to Trump’s wishes and whims is beyond question.
We have seen time and again that Trump apparently has little, if any, interest in the rule of law applying to him.
Trump’s call for the January 6 Committee members to go to jail is the dangerous and outrageous act of a President-elect who apparently believes he is all powerful and our democracy and the rule of law be damned.
