Trump’s Jan. 6 Pardons & Commutations Are A National Disgrace

Statement of Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer

President Donald Trump’s pardons and commuting of sentences today of convicted criminals who carried out the January 6 mob attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021 are a national disgrace.

The pardons and commutations are part of Trump’s continuing effort to rewrite history.

Trump will fail.

Historians write history, not the participants involved in the events of the day and not those who seek to twist reality to their own false narrative.

History will show with a clear eye that Trump tried and failed to overturn the 2020 presidential election that he incontrovertibly lost.

History will show with a clear eye that Trump attempted to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power.

History will show with a clear eye that Trump incited the violent mob attack on the Capitol.

History will also show with a clear eye how 140 police officers were injured in that Capitol mob attack that Trump incited.

In pardoning and commuting the sentences of these convicted criminals, Trump has made a mockery of claims that he is pro-police and a supporter of law-and-order.

Trump’s pardons and commutations are an insult to the law enforcement officers who protected the Capitol that day and to all law enforcement officers who daily put their lives on the line to protect our country and its citizens.

The pardons and commuting of sentences of convicted Jan. 6 criminals issued by President Trump today are a shameful way to start a presidency.
