D21 Joins In Statement Standing In Solidarity With Harvard

More than 300 organizations, including Democracy 21 Education Fund, have joined together in a statement against the government’s attack on Harvard University and improper efforts to remove its tax-exempt status.

In recent weeks, President Trump has repeatedly called for Harvard’s tax-exempt status to be revoked.

According to the statement:

When the federal government tries to dictate what a private university teaches or who they admit, that is an
overreaching government interfering with the liberty of individuals and organizations in the private sphere.

No president, whether this one or a future one, should have the power to punish private nonprofit organizations because he disagrees with them. If just one president weaponizes the government and abuses this power, no American’s political views will be protected from government retribution from that moment forward. Just as Americans must be free to attend places of worship and to vote, they must also be free to express their views.

[W]e stand firmly united in our support of private nonprofit organizations to ensure they can continue to serve their communities without fear of being targeted by their government – regardless of who is currently sitting in the White House.
