Attorney General Barr Shills For President Trump Today As He Undermines The Rule Of Law And Destroys His Own Credibility
Attorney General William Barr has been acting as defense attorney for President Trump ever since he sent his memo as a private citizen to the Justice Department in June 2018 attacking Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into obstruction of justice as “fatally misconceived.”
Given that Barr had prejudged the Mueller investigation as improper, as soon as he became Attorney General, Barr should have recused himself from any role in the Mueller investigation.
Barr, however, refused to step aside.
When Mueller completed his investigation and sent Barr his extensive report, Barr sent a four-page letter to Congress on March 24 giving his own summary conclusions about the report.
Barr’s summary included a finding that exonerated Trump from engaging in criminal obstruction of justice, even though the Mueller report explicitly said that Trump was not exonerated. President Trump then used the Barr statement to falsely claim that the Mueller report had totally exonerated him.
Barr proceeded to claim in congressional testimony that government spying had occurred on the Trump campaign, while at the same time stating he had no evidence to back up his claim. Barr certainly understood he was leaving the impression that the FBI and Justice Department had engaged in illegal activity in the investigation and that President Trump would use Barr’s unsubstantiated allegation to repeat his own unsubstantiated claims that illegal spying had occurred and the Mueller investigation was illegal.
This was followed by today’s bizarre and indefensible press conference by Attorney General Barr in which he gave a misleading interpretation of the Mueller report hours before Congress, the media, or the public could see it.
Attorney General Barr has been a shill for President Trump. He has failed to represent and protect the interests of the American people and seriously undermined the rule of law.
Attorney General Barr has dishonored his office, destroyed his credibility, and should now resign his position as Attorney General.
