Opportunities For Historic Democracy Reforms Lie Ahead
FRED WERTHEIMER’S WEEKLY NOTE | MAY 24, 2018
“This the beginning of a multiyear campaign to respond to the deep concerns of the American people about Washington’s rigged system by passing real reforms that will empower everyday Americans and curb influence money in American politics.“
The democracy reform package includes wide-ranging proposals to address campaign finance issues, voting rights, partisan redistricting, and ethics problems.
This the beginning of a multiyear campaign to respond to the deep concerns of the American people about Washington’s rigged system by passing real reforms that will empower everyday Americans and curb influence money in American politics.
If Democrats take control of the House in November, they are expected to move quickly to enact the reform proposals contained in the “Better Deal” package. This would be an important breakthrough for the democracy reform movement, but regardless, efforts will be made during the next Congress to continue building support in the House and the Senate to set the stage for enacting historic reforms in 2021, if a receptive Congress is elected.
Democracy 21 is part of a national coalition of groups that support these efforts and are currently working to build the largest coalition and grassroots effort ever assembled to support democracy reforms.
History is clear that major political scandals create the opportunity to enact major political reforms.
The Trump scandals start with the president and his family and pervade the government. They will only get worse as Trump’s term continues. The opportunity to enact historic reforms lies ahead and Democracy 21 will do everything we can to help win the democracy reform battles.
